A practical approach
Marina Bay Trail Ferals is a 501c3 non-profit and 100% volunteer organization dedicated to colony reduction through humane colony management. MBTF volunteers care for the feral and community cats that live along the Bay Trail and Meeker Slough and are out on the Bay Trail every morning and every evening feeding the kitties that live here while monitoring the area to ensure any new kitties coming into the area are treated humanely:
All cats are checked for identification and scanned for microchip, so they may be reunited with their guardians/owners.
Feral cats are trapped, tested, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, micro-chipped and relocated as Career Cats.
Abandoned domestic cats and kittens without identification or current owner information via microchip are tested, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, fostered and adopted into indoor homes.
Supporting the community
We are fortunate to have residents and neighbors of the Marina Bay community who are willing to devote their time and resources monitoring the area of the Bay Trail and Meeker Slough and caring for the animals that live here. It is a huge benefit to the City of Richmond Public Works and Parks Departments that these are 100% volunteer efforts and no City resources or tax dollars are being spent monitoring, trapping, relocating or inhumanely euthanizing these innocent animals.
TNR Success!
The cats that live along the Bay Trail and Meeker Slough have all been "TNR", which means they have been "Trapped", "Neutered" (or Spayed), and "Returned". In 2000, this colony included 76+ abandoned and feral cats. By 2009, through TNR, adoption, and natural attrition the population was reduced to 28; now there are now only 14 feral cats living in the colony. Don't be fooled by their sizes. These kitties are all 10-15+ years of age; some are small and some are fat; none are kittens and none are pregnant.
Since 2015, the Marina Bay Trail Ferals and these volunteers have kept the population of abandoned and feral cats along the Bay Trail and Meeker Slough from growing by 30+ cats, kittens and their inevitable offspring. Left unmanaged, the numbers of cats living around our community would have grown by many dozens in just one year.
Because today's Marina Bay Trail Ferals have been fixed, they will never have litters of kittens and studies show that these TNR cats will prevent other cats from moving into this area just by being here. Even if you don't like cats, you may not realize that TNR cats have an important job to do in keeping your neighborhood a nice place to live.
Wildlife along the Bay Trail
The coastal area surrounding Marina Bay supplies many kinds of habitats to support both marine and local wildlife environments. In our community of shorelines, marshes, mudflats, and parks we see evidence of numerous creatures: raccoons, skunks, birds, ducks, geese, turkeys, foxes, squirrels, possum, snakes, rats, cats, and mice. Our organization is focused on feeding the feral and lost/abandoned cat population; we are not intentionally feeding any other wildlife along the Bay Trail. It is of course impossible to hide the scents and scraps of food from the morning and evening feedings. MBTF volunteers and feeders are very careful to chase wildlife away from the feeding stations during feedings.
Food, Shelter & Veterinary
A 100% volunteer effort provides food, shelter and veterinary support for these Marina Bay Trail Ferals. Your friends, neighbors and volunteers from the Marina Bay community feed these cats and monitor this colony every day.
